Kuala Lumpur, Jan 7, 2010 - Peugeot Automobiles wants the Naza Group to make Malaysia its regional hub following the group's success in growing the French marquee in the country in 2009.

The French carmaker has chosen Naza to spearhead its expansion in the region after the group's sales of Peugeot vehicles in 2009 totaling 3,766 units accounted for 86% of Peugeot sales in the Asean region.

"We are confident we can make Malaysia Peugeot's regional hub. For this year, we will launch four models locally and ramp up exports of our Peugeot vehicles manufactured at our plant in Gurun to other parts of the region," said SM Nasarudin SM Nasimuddin, joint executive chairman of the Naza Group.

In 2009, the Naza Group sold 3,766 Peugeot cars comprising 2,347 units of the 206 Bestari, 885 units of the 308, 491 units of the 407 and 43 units of the 207 CC.

Excluding sales figures of the 206 Bestari which has been phased out, sales of Peugeot vehicles by the Naza Group in 2009 would have totaled 1,419, which was up seven-fold from 2008. The Naza Group was appointed official distributor for the Peugeot brand in January 2008.

For 2010, the group is targeting to sell 2,930 Peugeot cars in Malaysia, which will include an entry-level model, codenamed T33, which will be produced at the Naza Group's plant in Gurun.

As part of Peugeot's plans to expand its presence in the region and the importance of Malaysia to the French carmaker, the company will soon expand its ASEAN Regional Office in Petaling Jaya to coordinate operations for the entire Asia-Pacific region excluding China.

Peugeot's ASEAN Regional Office in Malaysia also runs an ASEAN training centre and technical help desk for after-sales technicians in the Asia-Pacific region and the Middle East.

Peugeot's plans for Malaysia and the region was conveyed by Peugeot's director of Asia Pacific and Africa International Operations, Jean-Yves Dossal to Naza Group's joint executive chairman, SM Nasarudin SM Nasimuddin who is currently in Paris, France attending the World Peugeot Conference.

The World Peugeot Conference, which runs from Jan 7 to 8, will detail the brand's future direction and future model line-up to its distributors worldwide.

SM Nasarudin also took the opportunity to present the Naza Group's recent NST/ Maybank Car of the Year award to Dossal.

The Peugeot 308 Turbo was recently named overall car of the year at the awards, marking the first time the French marquee has been honored with such an award in the Asean region.

Besides being named overall car of the year, the Peugeot 308 Turbo also picked up the top prize in the family car category at the awards. The judges of the awards said the Peugeot 308 Turbo was picked over 68 competitors due to its fuel efficiency, performance of its award-winning 1.6-litre direct-injection turbo engine as well as its full-length panoramic glass roof.

Furthermore, they said the locally-assembled Peugeot 308 Turbo won because of its competitive price positioning and build quality.
